Ethics Case Studies

Aaargh! Pirates!
Summary:
In this article, the author talks about music being leaked. Many news sources will report the story and give people access to the illegal music. The story questions whether or not it would be better for the news to just stay quiet about the situations.

Personally, I think that news sources should be reporting these incidents, but without any links. When they report it, the story may help bring the illegal music down by bringing attention to it. As long as the author leaves out any links to the illegal music, I think it is perfectly fine for them to publish an article.

Publishing Drunk Drivers' Photos
Summary:
This story is about taking action to stop drunk driving. By taking and publishing photos of drunk drivers, less people are going to risk getting caught driving under the influence. The article questions whether this is taking things too far.

I think that having your photo posted in a newspaper is a fair punishment for drunk driving. However, I don't think that publishing their personal information, like their address, is necessary. A photo and a name is enough to expose someone, publishing their address puts them at risk for being harassed or hurt by anyone.

Naming Victims of Sex Crimes
Summary:
This article talked about multiple sex crimes that released names. One of the main stories talked about what happened during her nine- month kidnapping. The author questioned whether or not names should be used in these types of stories.

I think that unless the victim's name has already been used in other news stories, then it shouldn't be brought up in stories reporting sex crimes. Lots of times, these stories involve underage children and they shouldn't be exposed on the internet. These victims have been through serious trauma and the last thing they need is to have everyone know what happened to them when they get to safety.
